Indian Maritime University
The Indian Maritime University came into being through an Act of Parliament (Act 22) on 14th November 2008 as a Central University. IMU is a Professional University intended for fulfilling the requirements of the Maritime Sector.
All activities need not be in a single location but should be distributed across different locations in the country, which have the comparative advantages to facilitate the best possible education and training in a given area of specialization.
The structure and content of the programmes leading to different levels of qualification of the personnel engaged in the maritime sector can be uniquely addressed by the IMU unconstrained by the limitations of the general purpose universities.
The IMU has its regional campuses at Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam and Cochin. IMU presently offers Diploma, Degree, Postgraduate Diploma and Post Graduate Degree courses in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering, Ship Building & Repair, Maritime Management, Doctoral Programmes and Post Sea Courses.
The Indian Maritime University encompasses under its fold the following seven premier government institutions:
(1) National Maritime Academy, Chennai
(2) T S Chanakya, Mumbai
(3) Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research, Mumbai
(4) Marine Engineering Research Institute, Mumbai
(5) Marine Engineering Research Institute, Kolkata
(6) Indian Institute of Port Management, Kolkata
(7) National Ship Design & Research Centre, Visakhapatnam
