The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu on 20th September 1997 and started with academic programs from October 1997.

Objectives of Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University

  • To provide for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge of law and their role in the development of better education.
  • To promote legal education and well being of the community generally.
  • To develop in the students and research scholar, a sense of responsibility to serve the society in the field of law by developing skills in regard to advocacy, legal services, legislation, law reforms and the like.
  • To organize lectures, seminars, symposia and conferences.
  • To promote legal knowledge and to make law as an efficient instrument of social development.
  • To provide access to legal education for large segment of the population and in particular to the disadvantage groups such as those living in remote and rural areas.
  • To promote acquisition of legal knowledge in a rapidly developing and changing society and to continually offer opportunities of upgrading knowledge, training and skills in the context of innovation, research and discovery in all fields of human endeavors.
  • To provide innovative system of University level education, flexible and open, in regard to methods and pace of learning, combination of course, age of entry, conduct of examination and operation of the programmes with view to promote learning and encourage excellence in new fields of legal knowledge.
  • To provide education and training in the various fields of law in the State raising their quality and improving their availability to the people.
  • To provide suitable post-graduate courses of study and prompt research in the various fields of law.
  • To promote national integration and the integrated development of the human personality through its policies and programmes.

Academic Programs of Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University

The School of Excellence in Law of this University, offers 5 year B.A.LL.B.(Hons.), 5 year B.Com.LL.B.(Hons.), 5 year B.B.A.LL.B.(Hons.), 5 year B.C.A.LL.B.(Hons.) and 3 year LL.B.(Hons.) Degree Courses and is modelled on the lines of other National Law Schools in the country.

The Post-Graduate and Research Centre of this University offers Master of Law (LL.M. Degree Courses)
under CBCS pattern in nine different specializations and provides opportunity to pursue research in
diverse areas of Law. One Master’s Degree Course and twelve Post Graduate Diploma Courses and one
Certificate Course are offered through Distance Education Mode.

5 Years B.A. / B.B.A. LL.B.(Hons.) Degree Course

A candidate should have passed Higher Secondary Examination (10 plus 2) OR its equivalent examination recognized by the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Chennai and should have secured not less than 70% of the total marks in the aggregate of all the subjects.

The candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe communities should have secured not less than 60% of the total marks in the aggregate of all subjects.

In case of students who make a claim under the Non-Resident Indians (NRI) category, they should have secured not less than 70% in the qualifying examination.

On confirmation of receipt of payment for application cost through swift mode, the application will be taken into consideration for processing. 

5 Years B.Com.LL.B.(Hons.) Degree Course

Candidates who have passed Higher Secondary Examination (10 2) with Commerce group subjects or equivalent examination with relevant subjects alone are eligible to apply. They should have secured not less than 70% of the total marks in the aggregate of all the subjects.

The candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe communities should have secured not less than 60% of the total marks in the aggregate of all subjects.

In case of students who make a claim under the Non-Resident Indians (NRI) category, they should have secured not less than 70% in the qualifying examination.

Age limit for admission: No age limit.

5 Years B.C.A.LL.B. (Hons.) Degree Course

Candidates who have passed Higher Secondary Examination (10 2) or equivalent examination with Computer Science subject alone are eligible to apply. They should have secured not less than 70% of the total marks in the aggregate of all the subjects.

The candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe communities should have secured not less than 60% of the total marks in the aggregate of all subjects.

In case of students who make a claim under the Non-Resident Indians (NRI) category, they should have secured not less than 70% in the qualifying examination.

3 Years LL.B.(Hons.) Degree Course

The candidates should have passed any degree (B.A./B.Sc./B.Com./B.C.A./B.B.A./ B.E./B.Tech./M.B.B.S./B.Pharm/other graduates in general) and should have secured not less than 60% of the total marks in the aggregate.

The candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe communities should have secured not less than 55% of the total marks in the aggregate of all subjects.

Non-Resident Indian (NRI) candidate should have secured a minimum of 60% of the total marks in the aggregate of all subjects.

2 Years LL.M.Degree Course (9 Branches)

The general eligibility condition for admission to Master‟s Programme is through formal education as per the UGC Regulations 2001. Candidates who have successfully completed a three year / five year under-graduate degree course in Law conducted by the University or equivalent thereto shall be eligible for admission to a Masters Degree programme in any of the LL.M. courses. Candidate should have obtained a minimum of 45% of marks under New Regulations [40% under Old Regulations]. Candidates who are awaiting results may also apply.

Admission in Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University

Admission to the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University begins in June every year. Selection is done on the basis of marks obtained in the qualification examination. Admission to Ph.D. program is done on the basis of Entrance test followed by Interview.
