Directorate of Government Examinations Tamil Nadu

The Directorate of Government Examinations is responsible for conducting the Board examinations for the students studying in Tamil Nadu State Board schools in Std X and XII. The mark certificates issued to the students of standard X and XII is considered as a vital and valued document for continuing higher education and for seeking job opportunities.

Apart from above, the Directorate is also conducting examinations and issuing certificate for Diploma in Elementary Education , Government Technical Examinations and ESLC (Eight Std – Private Study). In addition , Scholarship Examinations such as NMMS, TRUSTS and National Talent Search Examinations are conducted by this Directorate.

This Directorate has 7 Regional offices at Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli , Chennai, Cuddalore and Vellore. The logistics work for transporting of stationery items related to examinations, distribution of fund for conducting examinations and and distribution of Mark Certificate are performed by this regional offices.

Objectives of Directorate of Government Examinations Tamil Nadu

Main objective of the Department of Government Examination is the assessment of Scholastic attainment of academic students and skilled attainments by conducting X and XII Board Examinations, Government Technical Examinations, Diploma in Elementary Education, NMMS, TRUSTS, National Talent Search Examinations and releasing of results in time, and issuing certificates therefore under the authority of Government of Tamil Nadu.

Higher Secondary and SSLC Examinations
Every year under the academic stream of 10 year pattern SSLC and Higher Secondary Examination for the 12th standard are the main examinations conducted by this Department.

Diploma in Elementary Educations
The Directorate of Government Examinations also conducting the examinations for the Diploma in Elementary Education. 

Eighth Standard Public Examination (ESLC)
In Order to impart minimum general education qualification to obtain employment / promotion at basic level , DGE conducts the ESLC Examinations.

Government Technical Examinations
Tamil Nadu Rural Students Talent Search Examination (TRUSTS Examination)
Tamil Nadu Rural Students Talent Search Examinationis being conducted every year in the month of September, to encourage the rural students.

In the year 2016, 53,888 students appeared for the TRUST examination and 3,100 students were eligible for scholarships.

National Means cum Merit Scholarship (NMMS)
The Directorate of Government Examinations conducts the National Means Cum Merit Scholarship (NMMS) examination and the candidates are selected based on the marks and rule of reservation.

Candidates who have passed VII standard from Central/State Government Schools / Government Aided Schools with 55% of marks (50% of marks for SC/ST) and studying in VIII standard and whose parental annual income does not exceed Rs.1,50,000/- are eligible to appear for the examinations and the selected candidates will get a sum of Rs.6,000/- as scholarship per annum (at the rate of Rs.500/- per month) from IX standard onwards upto XII standard. 

National Talent Search Examination (NTSE)
The Directorate acts as the Nodal Agency for National Council for Educational Research and Training in conducting the National Talent Search Examination at Level I. Students, who are studying in X standard, in the State / Central Board Schools during the academic year, are eligible to appear for this examination.
