Education Profile of Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is one of the most literate states in India with the literacy rate at 80.33% in 2011. The education system of Tamil Nadu increased in leap and bounds during the British rule. During the mid 19th century everal schools were established within Tamil Nadu. The grants that the state government authorities received from the central government were used for the promotion of education by building several schools and centers of higher education in and around Tamil Nadu. Today, it is one of the important centres of higher education in India.

Like most states in India, Tamil Nadu follows 10 2 system. The state government introduced ‘Sarva Siksha Abhiyan’ in Tamil Nadu, following which a girl child till the age of five are entitled to receive free primary education in government schools across Tamil Nadu cities.The schools area mostly affiliated to CBSE or ICSE Board. The government schools are affiliated to the state board. The government of Tamil Nadu is making huge investments in education. Realising the importance of role of youths in achieving the goals of the Vision 2023, the Chief Minister had been implementing 14 welfare schemes for the benefit of school students. In an attempt to encourage students to pursue higher education, the Chief Minister had implemented a scheme under which Rs. 5,000 was deposited in the names of students pursuing class 10 to 12 in government and government aided schools. It is famous for some of the world class boarding schools which include St Jude's Public School and Junior College, Kotagiri, Chinmaya International Residential School, The Lawrence School, Lovedale and Maharishi International Residential School, Sriperumbudur.
