Thiruvalluvar University was established in 2002 in Vellore by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The core of the University is formed by the Post Graduate Extension Centre of the University of Madras which was functioning before 2002.
Currently, Thiruvalluvar University has been seven departments, Tamil, English, Economics, Zoology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Bio-Technology. 98 arts and Science college are affiliated to this university, of which 10 are government Arts and science colleges, 9 are aided Arts and science colleges, 3 are oriental title colleges, 72 are self financing Arts and Science Colleges and the remaining 4 are University Constituent colleges.

Admission in Thiruvalluvar University
Admission to its PG courses on the basis of marks scored in the qualifying examination as well as performance in Entrance Examination conducted by University. The Entrance examinations will be conducted in the respective departments of the courses to which the candidate has applied for at the Thiruvalluvar University, Serkkadu.
The University runs research course with various specialisation in the field of M.Phil and Ph.D. The maximum period for completion of the M.Phil., programme is two years in the case of Full-time candidates, and three years in the case of Part-Time candidates. Whereas, for Ph.D, the maximum completion period is five years for full time candidates and for six years for part time candidates.
Admission for both the courses shall made on the basis of the marks obtained by the candidates in qualifying examination and marks scored in the Entrance Test followed by viva-voce and interview.
The students who have scored qualified marks in UGC/CSIR (JRF) Examination / SLET/GATE / teacher fellowship holder are exempted from the entrance test of M.Phil full time course admission.
Whereas, in case of Ph.D admission, the students who qualify UGC/CSIR (JRF) Examination NET/SLET/GATE and teacher fellowship holders are exempted from the proposed entrance examination but they need to sit for an interview which is of 60 marks.
